Prepare for wildfire season – week 6
A fire on the ground can quickly spread to trees through ladder fuels or brush underneath the trees. Low-hanging branches can ignite and spread the fire to the tree crowns, igniting other trees in the canopy and sending embers flying.
To help prevent this, trim lower tree branches 6 to 10 feet from the ground and clear brush underneath. For shorter trees, do not exceed 1/3 of the tree’s overall height. Also, trim any branches that are overhanging or are within five feet of your home.
Be sure you have the right tools: pruning shears, loppers, reciprocating saw, pole saw, safety glasses, and gloves. Use your own or borrow free of charge from your local tool library. Learn more at southkingtools.org.
